How to Get Your Photography Business Noticed on Twitter

As a photographer, you spend your working life behind a lens taking gorgeous pictures that you develop and sell. But, sometimes it seems that the selling side of that equation is the most difficult part. You may have heard that Twitter can be a greatly valuable online marketing source, but how can you use it? How can you market your photography 140 characters at a time? Keep reading for answers to these and other questions pertaining to using Twitter to further your photography business.

Why Should You Have a Twitter Account?

If you’re looking at social media outlets from the perspective of a photographer, you’re likely drawn to places like Pinterest and Facebook, and rightly so. Twitter, on the other hand, might not have jumped on your radar as an extremely valuable tool, but it is. So why should you have a twitter account? Here are a few reasons that Twitter is a great idea for your photography business.

  • Extra! Extra!- You can easily update your followers regarding art show dates, new uploads to your online shop, what you’re working on, contests you might be having, and a number of other things. In short, easy to read snippets, your followers can be kept in the loop of what you’re doing, and this can result in sales, new followers, or both.
  • Bragging Post – Were you just honored with an amazing award from a magazine? Twitter is a fast and easy way to update your followers about it. This not only helps earn you credibility, but it automatically piques the interest of your followers.
  • Human Nature – You’re not just a business owner and photographer, you’re a living, breathing human being with a soul, a personality, and a sense of humor. Getting that across on your website or in a professional interview might be difficult, but on Twitter, you can start to relate to your audience one witty 140-character tweet at a time.

While there are other reasons that Twitter is a good idea for marketing your photography business, these are the top three. Putting yourself out there as a person and showing people that you’re an active and engaged part of the online community makes you approachable, and that’s everything for a small business owner.

You’re Here, Now What? How to Get Noticed

So, Twitter can do all of these amazing things for your photography business, but how do you get noticed so all of these things can happen? Getting noticed on Twitter is sometimes a difficult thing, but if you know which cards to play you can often gain a lot of attention in a relatively short amount of time. Getting noticed on Twitter has a lot to do with knowing what not to do. These tips can help.

  • Don’t Get Follow Happy – Some new twerps (that’s Twitter slang for people on Twitter) want to follow everyone and their mother from day one to get more followers in return. But, it’s not necessarily about having people in general follow you, it’s about having the right people follow you. Be selective.
  • Don’t Stalk Your Competition – It can be tempting to jump on Twitter, follow every celebrity photographer in the book, and start stalking their Twitter feed. While you should follow your competition, don’t get too wrapped up in cyber-stalking their tweets. Not only does it take valuable time away from your business, but you start comparing your very unique business to others, and that can be dangerous. Learn, yes, but don’t spend too much time dwelling on it.
  • Don’t Forget Professionalism – You’re going to want to be personable on Twitter, yes, but this isn’t your private page, so don’t start telling the details of your love life on your professional Twitter feed. Make sure that most of what you post is related to your business, and that the posts that aren’t related to photography are mild and aimed at making you relate-able.

Getting people to follow you is a matter of knowing who to follow. Try doing a search for hashtags like #photography, #iloveart, and so on. Anyone talking about how much they love photography and art is right in your wheelhouse. Follow your customers, vendors, and those who seem genuinely interested in what you have to offer. People who love photography will share photography and that helps you.

 How to Use Hashtags On Twitter: #Importantstuff:

Hashtags have been the brunt of a lot of jokes recently, but they’re quite effective when it comes to marketing. Were you featured in Well-Known Photography Magazine? Then make sure you note it when you post about it by saying something like “Thanks #WellKnownPhotographyMagazine for honoring me for the #AwardName.”

Hashtags are not as complicated as they seem to be. Essentially, they’re just a way to flag keywords. Any keyword, business name, person, or topic that is relevant to your business and post should get a hashtag in front of it. And make sure you note which hashtags are trending, as well. Using Twitter to your advantage can help you make new friends, gain new customers, and keep up to date on industry news. With practice, it’s extremely easy to get used to, and pretty soon you’ll start growing your business 140 characters at a time.

Synapses to Shutter Speed: Journey From Neuroscience to Professional Photographer

 

Rachael-Harms-Photographer Rachael Harms, Professional Photographer (left) : I have always been fixated on preserving memories. When my stepdad put my first 35mm in my hand at the age of 10, I discovered I had the power to literally freeze a memory. I was obsessed. Ever since then, there has been a direct correlation between how happy I am and how many photos I’m taking.

The first photo I was proud of was a crooked picture of a distant windmill, viewed through a dusty cabin window. Unlike so many other forms of art, despite my style shifting and talent growing, I’m still proud of my original work. When my dad got me my first digital camera when I was 13, I was able to take far more photos which lead to typical teen-photographer phase- taking pictures of my feet and abandoned stuffed animals in an alley trash heap (thinking that was rather artsy). Despite not having much experience or a large portfolio, I was very fortunate to have my interest in photography validated when I was able to showcase my work at age 16. My best friend and I were on the good side of Rob, the owner of Rob’s Vintique, so he let us put our art up on the walls. This absolutely fueled my desire to pursue photography.

I enjoyed film during this time as well, working for my dad’s wedding videography company and producing highlight tapes for my sports teams. I entered college with the intention of majoring in film, but someone (with my best interests in mind), told me I should really put my time towards something that uses my brain more. After loving a psychobiology class my first quarter, I switched my major to neuroscience. What better subject to study to use my brain than – well – the brain?

To use this new feature you must be utilizing the Gallery Pro style web galleries and the new fulfillment method (G-Order). Not sure how to use the G-Order fulfillmentClick Here to learn how to take advantage of this feature.

How does the Digital Download Fulfillment work?

1. Add the digital download option(s) to your Price List Items section (digital download options are at the bottom of available products list).

2. When your customers browse the gallery and order a digital file, they order it in the same way they would order any other print. When ordering a digital file the customer can not add printing related features, such as cropping or borders.

3. Fulfill the order like you would any other print order(s) using the online upload
(G-Order) in your Online Administration page.

4. If this image is ordered by more than one client we will
take care of everything – there is no need for you to upload the same image again.

Professional Architectural Photographer Greg Wilson

I consider myself one of the most fortunate people on the planet. I photograph interesting structures for talented, creative people and they pay me to do so, what could be better. 30 years ago my father, bored in his retirement, worked a deal with a local realtor to provide them with some black and white photos for advertising. I had done some amateur darkroom work in the past and dad asked me to help him in his new venture. At the time I had neither a darkroom nor a camera. From that meager beginning my current company developed.

We provided the still photos for a real estate television program for the 3 plus years it ran as well as advertising photography for a couple of regional magazines. Although we provided all types of work my real interest was in the architecture. I really enjoyed learning the art of balancing for various light sources and controlling the viewers eye by creative lighting techniques. Of course that was back in film days and we were using Hasselblad and Sinar view cameras. In order to achieve the results we desired we purchased our own drum scanner and started blending images together before the term HDR was in common usage.

DigilabsPro Photographer of the Month: Michael Gallitelli

My love for photography began when I dropped out of college majoring in Architecture. From there, I moved to Florida hanging out with friends from back home. This is when I starting taking photos. I would mail my parents images of the beaches, oceans and building’s. My parent’s really encouraged me to pursue the photography field and helped me along the way.  A year later I wanted to go back to college for photography but instead I starting reading every photography book I could find. During this period I met a local photographer who offered to hire me as an assistant. I assisted in weddings and portraits learning lighting and posing. After working there for several years I decided to open my studio in 1978.  My landlord at the time was an attorney who had a client that owned a photography studio. The owner passed away and they needed someone to run the business so my landlord asked me to run the studio. This is where I learned the business side of photography. Since then I haven’t looked back always willing to learn the latest techniques in my field.

I truly love the wedding business, today’s brides a more than willing than ever to let me create images that are unique and personal.  I try to think outside the box and most of the time it really works.

In my free time I love traveling to National Parks with my 2 sons, taking landscape images, hiking and fishing.  I really love the game of golf but I am really terrible at it. Maybe I just love the outdoors.  Bowling is my game, 2- 300’s this year and a 297. My favorite professional sports teams are the New York Yankees and the New York Knicks. So you can probably tell that I am from the Empire state of New York.

1. What inspires you?

Technology has inspired me. Although my back ground in photography started with film, digital imaging has opened the door for me to create, experiment with today’s latest software and trends.

I opened my studio as a full time photographer in March 1978.
